Sunshine For Seniors – The Bloom Project 2025
Loneliness and isolation are significant challenges for many seniors in our communities. Sunshine For Seniors – The Bloom Project aims to brighten their lives by delivering daffodil plants and handmade cards, helping them feel special and connected.
We provide daffodil plants to seniors living alone or in long-term care facilities, each accompanied by a cheerful, handmade card, many created by local children & adults in the community. The joy of watching the flowers bloom brings meaningful recreation and a sense of purpose, while the personal touch of the cards brightens their day.
Since 2021, we’ve delivered over 8,000 plants and cards, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many seniors have been moved to tears by the kindness they’ve received, and some have kept the cards as a reminder of the connection. These small acts of kindness demonstrate how powerful a simple gesture can be.
Schools and students can play a vital role in making seniors feel valued and connected. Students can create cheerful, colorful cards filled with messages, jokes, or stories. Fundraising efforts can help raise money for daffodil plants, with every $10 raised providing three seniors with a daffodil plant. You could also host card-making nights, allowing friends and families to come together and create cards for seniors, or volunteer to help with collecting donations and supporting deliveries.
The cards are deeply cherished by seniors. During visits to long-term care homes, I've seen firsthand the powerful impact of these simple acts of kindness. Many seniors still hold on to the cards delivered in 2021, keeping them as a reminder of the kindness and connection they experienced.
For card-making, older students can write letters, share stories, or introduce themselves, talking about their hobbies, favorite colors, or foods. Seniors love hearing about young people’s lives and interests. Younger students can simply sign their name or add a drawing—both of which are sure to brighten someone's day.
Thank you for supporting Sunshine for Seniors! Your kindness will make a lasting impact on seniors in your community, reminding them that they are valued and remembered.

In 2021, my son Riley and I made weekly trips to our local florist. One cold January day, we found daffodil plants and decided to buy a few to deliver to isolated seniors in our neighborhood, hoping to brighten their days during the lockdowns. The response was overwhelming. At the time, both my father and father-in-law were in senior residences, where many hadn’t had visitors for months due to restrictions. We set a goal to deliver 200 daffodils and cards to their homes, but the support we received far surpassed expectations. By the end of that winter, we had delivered over 2,000 daffodils and cards to long-term care facilities across Toronto, thanks to generous donations and families coming together to create homemade cards. The impact was profound. Many seniors, who hadn’t received a gesture like that in years, were moved to tears. One residence even replanted the bulbs in the fall, ensuring the flowers would bloom again each spring. That first year showed me the power of small acts of kindness and how deeply they can connect us. Four years later, we've delivered over 8,000 daffodils. Though this initiative began during a difficult time in the pandemic, it opened my eyes to the fact that loneliness exists year-round for many. It’s a powerful reminder of how important it is to connect with others and let them know they matter.
